Siung Cliff: A Rock Climbing Paradise in Yogyakarta

Siung Cliff is located at Siung Beach in Gunungkidul, Yogyakarta, approximately 65 kilometers from Yogyakarta city center. The journey takes around 1.5 to 2 hours by car or motorcycle, leading visitors away from the city and into the dramatic coastal landscape of southern Gunungkidul.

Siung Beach is known for its unspoiled coastal scenery, clear views of the Indian Ocean, and impressive limestone cliffs rising around the shoreline. These cliffs have made Siung much more than a beach destination—they have also established it as one of Yogyakarta’s best-known natural rock climbing areas.

Historically, Siung has been reported to have around 250 climbing routes, offering a wide variety of challenges for climbers of different experience levels, from recreational and sport climbing to more demanding routes for experienced climbers.

For rock climbing enthusiasts, Siung Cliff has long been a special place.

On weekends, climbers from climbing communities, university outdoor clubs (Mapala), climbing clubs, and independent groups come to Siung. Some simply want to spend a weekend climbing and enjoying the coast, while others come for serious training—to build endurance, improve their technique, take on challenging routes, and strengthen their confidence on natural rock.

Yet for first-time visitors, finding reliable information about Siung Beach and its climbing areas has not always been easy. Beginner climbers, in particular, may want to experience climbing at Siung but have no idea where to start, which routes are suitable for them, or whom they should contact for assistance.

That is why we are here.

We provide local tourism assistance and technical climbing guidance for visitors who want to explore Siung Beach and experience rock climbing at Siung Cliff. Our aim is simple: to help visitors enjoy the experience with appropriate guidance, equipment, and proper climbing safety procedures.

Siung is more than a beautiful beach on the southern coast of Yogyakarta. It is a meeting place for the sea, the cliffs, and generations of climbers who have come here to challenge themselves.

For some, Siung is a place to enjoy the sea. For climbers, it is a place where the journey begins at the foot of the cliff.

CLIFF A : 3 Sport Climbing Route 

The cliff is the closest to the base camp. The Welcome gate of the special interest resort. There are 3 sport climbing routes :

-Route 1 : Jari Tajam. ( 5.10), 5 Bolt

  There is a rather steep holder

-Route 2 : Welcome to Siung. (5.10), 5 Bolt

CLIFF B : 4 Sport Climbing Route 

From Cliff A toward eastern direction after a little slope of cliff A turn north. There are 4 sport climbing routes :

-Route 1 : Kali Malang (5.12). 5 Bolt

CLIFF D : 9 Sport Climbing Route 

From Cliff B toward south direction, there is a small field with some face to face cliff. Cliff B is in the north side. In the front side there are 6 sport climbing routes and in the back side there are 3 sport climbing routes :

Cliff D : The Back Side
The entrance into the valley and upward between cliff B and D, a fun overhang at the end of the corner unnoted route which is quiete good. There are 3 climbing sports route :

CLIFF E : 2 Sport Climbing Route 

The cliff is in southern part, exactly opposite to cliff D, the back side is sea, in the eastern part there is a small valley. There are 2 sports climbing routes :

CLIFF F : 12 Sport Climbing Route 

The cliff is in the west side of Cliff D and E. On top of it, there are a lot of sharp, pointed stones. One of them is like a sea horse with a litlle overhang surface. The Cliff has the biggest in number among the others. There are sport climbing routes :

The cliff is located in the west corner opposite to the sea. From Cliff F walk to the west direction downward through the alley and go upward. The estern side of this cliff is full overhang, while the southern part is faces.
