When Celebration Meets Responsibility: Protecting Semarang’s Old Town During Eid Holidays

The Eid holiday season is always a special moment in Indonesia. Families gather, streets come alive, and popular destinations are filled with laughter and excitement. One of the places that consistently attracts visitors during this time is the historic Kota Lama Semarang, known for its charming colonial architecture and vibrant atmosphere. However, amidst the festive crowds this year, two unfortunate incidents have raised concerns about the importance of preserving public spaces.

During the peak of the holiday, acts of vandalism were found on pedestrian facilities in the area. Several parts of the walkway were defaced with graffiti, disrupting not only the visual beauty of the environment but also the comfort of visitors who come to enjoy the historical ambiance. Public pedestrian paths are designed to enhance accessibility and provide a pleasant experience for tourists. When these facilities are damaged, it affects everyone.

In addition to the vandalism, another troubling incident occurred: the removal of parking direction signs. These signs play a crucial role in guiding visitors, especially during busy periods like Eid when traffic flow becomes more complex. Without clear directions, confusion can arise, potentially leading to congestion and a less enjoyable experience for tourists.

Recognizing the urgency of these issues, the Dinas Kebudayaan dan Pariwisata Kota Semarang responded swiftly. Rather than focusing solely on corrective actions, they took a more holistic approach by launching a public campaign that emphasizes the importance of protecting shared tourism assets. The campaign encourages visitors and the local community to take collective responsibility in maintaining the cleanliness, order, and beauty of public spaces.

At the same time, the security team in the Old Town area acted quickly to address the practical challenges caused by the removal of signage. The missing parking direction signs were promptly reinstalled, ensuring that visitors could navigate the area smoothly once again. This immediate response reflects the commitment of the management team to maintain a high standard of service, even during peak visitor periods.

These incidents serve as a reminder that tourism is not just about enjoying a destination, but also about respecting it. Every visitor plays a role in preserving the places they visit. Small actions, such as not littering, avoiding vandalism, and respecting public facilities, can make a significant difference.

As the Eid celebrations continue, it is hoped that awareness will grow among visitors about the importance of responsible tourism. The beauty of Kota Lama Semarang is a shared heritage—one that should be protected and appreciated by all.

In the end, maintaining a destination is not only the responsibility of the authorities, but also of every individual who steps into it. Because a truly memorable holiday is not just about the place we visit, but how well we care for it.
